Happy New Year. Keep up the good work.

Regarding speed . . if you consider the processes of mankind in terms of control theory . . . inputs, outputs, feedback, leads, lags, etc. you would clearly see that the increase of speed, ( Increased gain of the system) fosters instability in all its forms. Say in in a million different ways but that is what modern humankind can expect . . . unless it get very, very smart . . very, very fast. Maybe this can be countered by faster praying.

It is with love and appreciation that I concur with Grandpa Doc's toast for the New Year !

Being the unrelentingly Semi-Unbiased, similarly sort of at times Non-Partisan, and of course Socially Liberal & Fiscally Conservative kinda guy - at least once a month I drop in on the Wilson Int'l Center for Scholars website. Trying to remember the scholar that I used to be, I relish the opportunity to engage in more "concentrated thought" while focusing on their reportage of their event discussions and research programs.

My true to the core liberal academician, retired professor of statistical analysis, real genius, brother-in-law led me to this site well over a decade ago. As you might have guessed - we have butted heads on political policy issues a couple of times. Out of respect for his brilliant mind and the knowledge that no matter what pure statement of conservative fact that I proffer, I will never be able to convert him, so I don't send him any of my right (dare I say) leaning rants.

Ah, but you I haven't given up hope on - so I'll continue sending my rants to you just to keep you smiling ! !

All the best for 2012 !

As it is well worth repeating . . . "Here's to health and happiness !"

Good thoughtful piece--my humble opinion is that the increase in speed of thoughts and opinions etc. will continue, until Moore's law is reversed. If you recall, he was the co-founder of Intel ,who in 1965 proposed that the speed of integrated circuits (miniaturization) , will roughly double every eighteen months. This has come to pass, and has held until this day. You might infer, therefore that competition will demand that information continue to travel even quicker than before. Heaven help Wilson's memory. Happy and healthy New Year to you and yours, and may your creativitity and ingenuity on these pages

As we begin our New Year 2012 I want to thank you again for your brilliant and insightful essays. They bring delight as well as serious contemplation.

May you and your family have all that you wish your students.

Fascinating! The front page article in the NY Times Sunday Review. is entitled "The Joy of Quiet". It's the same subject as your article, except yours is better.
